Spring 2002

Learning Showcase: IRLS 601 - Knowledge Structures II

Final Projects, Presentations & Other Deliverables

Note: Students had to do a number of things throughout the duration of this course. Some of this work is shared publicly here. For information about the course and requirements, check the Course Syllabus. Students looked at a variety of online thesauri as well as tools and standards; a complete list can be found in the KS2 Toolbox.

April/May 2003 Note: SBSTech Support blew the student work away without warning! I have uploaded final projects (thesaurus/citation study) from student submissions into WebCT and my own backups. I will refresh others (such as pictures of students and assignment submissions as time permits) and hopefully by end of Summer 2003.

  1. Paul Bracke (citation study - forthcoming)
  2. Susan Irwin - Thesaurus of Knowledge Management
  3. Jenna Johnson - Information Extraction Thesaurus
  4. April Rice - Thesaurus of Acoustic Phonetic Terms
  5. Jenny Vargas - Thesaurus of Social Life in Colonial Latin America

Course News & Update:

Please note that IRLS 601 Knowledge Structures II will no longer be offered in the future. Starting Fall 2002 a new track (or specialization), Knowledge Organization has been initiated and the courses in this technical, core area of LIS have been distributed over several others. Read this article for details, http ://www.dlib.org/dlib/july02/coleman/07coleman.html. Some courses leading to the KO specialization include:
  • IRLS 401/501 - Organization of Information (formerly Knowledge Structures I)
  • IRLS 601 - Knowledge Structures (formerly Knowledge Structures II)
  • IRLS 588 - Theory of Classification
  • IRLS 695e - Controlled Vocabularies (taught first time in Spring 2003 and integrating Information Architecture and some Information Systems skills and knowledge besides creation of controlled vocabularies including thesauri)

Additionally, IRLS 589, Scholarly Communication, will cover the bibliometrics (including citation analysis) aspects that were a part of IRLS 601.
