Knowledge Organization Mini-Thesaurus

John Stanton -- 5/12/04

Introduction:

To construct the list of terms selected for this mini-thesaurus two text books on Knowledge Organization were consulted: Organizing Knowledge 3rd Edition and The Organization of Information. The index of each book was examined and words that were considered to be important concepts in the field (by me) were listed. Relationships between the concepts were derived from looking at the index of each book and reading sections of the texts. The list was alphabetized and the concepts and relationships were listed. Definitions were taken from all of the sources listed in the references sections listed below and entered as scope notes into the document.

The purpose of this mini-thesaurus is to list important concepts in the field of knowledge organization. Specifically concepts related to controlled vocabularies and classification were included. Terms used to define relationships between terms in a thesaurus (e.g. USE) were noted to be particularly important for this assignment and were included in the list of terms.

The mini-thesaurus was constructed according to the rules of ANSI/NISO Z39.19. Suggestions from Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition were also incorporated into the construction of the mini-thesaurus.

This document is not anticipated to be updated any further. However suggestions for changes or corrections can be sent to the author at stanton@email.arizona.edu.
